RAINBOW HISTORY

Use of the rainbow flag by the gay community began in 1978 when it first appeared in the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day Parade. Borrowing symbolism from the hippie movement and black civil rights groups, San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker designed the rainbow flag in response to a need for a symbol that could be used year after year. Baker and thirty volunteers hand-stitched and hand-dyed two huge prototype flags for the parade.

The flags had eight stripes, each color representing a component of the community:

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.

The next year Baker approached San Francisco Paramount Flag Company to mass-produce rainbow flags for the 1979 parade. Due to production constraints the hot pink and turquoise were removed and blue replaced the indigo.

This six-color version spread from San Francisco to other cities, and soon became the widely-known symbol of gay pride and diversity it is today.

The Rainbow Flag celebrated its 29th year as a symbol of gay and lesbian pride in 2007 and will celebrate its 30th Year this year in 2008!

Pink &
Black Triangle History

The symbolism of the pink and black triangles date back to World War II, in 1935 the Nazis passed anti-homosexual laws. The Nazi death camps were constructed to eliminate Jews, homosexuals, gypsies, Jehovahs Witnesses, the mentally and physically handicapped, emigrants and others. Each of these groups were identified with a symbol on their camp uniforms, just as Jews were forced to wear a yellow Star of David; homosexuals were forced to wear one of the two triangles.

Gay men in nazi death camps were required to wear Pink Triangles on their uniforms to identify them for special abuse. Hitler meant it as a mark of shame — the LGBT community has turned it into a symbol of pride. The Pink Triangle is now used as a gay identification symbol as well as a reminder of oppression.

The Black Triangle was used to identify socially unacceptable women, according to the Nazis. Lesbians were included in this classification. Now, Lesbians have reclaimed the Black Triangle as our symbol in defiance of repression and discrimination.

It is rumored that there was a burgundy triangle which designated transgendered prisoners, but so far this is only a rumor and has not been substantiated with facts.

BiPride Flag History

The flag itself is a horizontal tricolor of magenta, lavender, and royal blue in proportions 2:1:2.

The BiPride Flag was introduced at the BiCafe’s first Anniversary Party on Dec. 5th 1998. It is an evolved version of the Pink and Blue triangles. The triangles often overlap with purple being the resultant color. So the flag was designed with an overlap feel to it.

The pink color represents sexual attraction to the same sex only (gay and lesbian), the blue represents sexual attraction to the opposite sex only (straight) and the resultant overlap color purple represents sexual attraction to both sexes (bi).

Gay-Teen Suicide Awareness Ribbon

This ribbon, used mainly online, was created by Xavier Neptus, a personal survivor of attempted teen suicide himself. He was inspired to create this campaign after hearing Jason Bolton, a young man who was thrown out of a suburban Detroit high school for being gay, speak about gay youth suicide at the 1997 Lansing, Michigan Pride March. According to Neptus, the color white was chosen to represent clarity of thought and innocence of youth. Neptus quotes on his site that an American teenager attempts suicide to every five of ours because of difficulty dealing with the stresses of being gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender that are ontop of any difficulties that he/she might experience as a person.

Aids Statistics:

Over 22 million people have died from AIDS. And over 42 million people are living with HIV or AIDS. Between 75 and 85 out of every 100 HIV positive adults have been infected through unprotected hterosexual intercourse and homosexual intercourse accounting for about only 5 to 10. The extra numbers come from mothers during birth.

There are 14,000 new infections every day and about 5 million per year. 70% of new infectsions in the U.S. occur in men and 30% in women. Half of those 5 million occur among people from 15 to 24 years of age.

*AIDS Awareness Day is December 1st.*
